An Incident...

DH and I, like most people have had the family dramas...and regular readers would know that we've had the 'living beside a building development' dramas over the last 11 months, but we've just had a bit of drama on this holiday.

This morning at breakfast here in York, we had to share a table with an Aussie couple. They asked us if we had heard all the noise in the early hours of the morning. There had been a really loud noise they said and lots of screaming. Apparently the couple had looked out of their window later and had seen police officers with tapes etc. DH and I had heard nothing. When the man running the guesthouse came to the table with the breakfasts, the other couple asked him what had gone on in the night.

He said that a young female guest had jumped from the first floor window of her room...she survived. Two paramedics had been called when she was on the window sill and they had tried to get her to move back into her room. They called the police when their efforts seemed fruitless. While the police were racing up to her room, the girl jumped. According to the manager of the guesthouse, she survived because she fell on a car...which had more 'give' than the concrete and bitumen of the carpark. How awful that someone felt so distraught that they jumped...we were all horrified by the news.

The young lady jumped from the window on the first floor on the right hand side at the front...

The manager then asked DH and I what car we had...we told him, 'the black VW Golf' and you know what I'm going to say next aren't you? Yep...she jumped and hit our hire car. The damage is visible but consists of a number of dents; some on the roof of the car, some on the passenger side near the windscreen. We had been told by the manager to park near the front door as all the angle parking spaces in the yard were taken. Parking beside the kerb outside the guesthouse requires a permit which we didn't have.
The photo doesn't really show the dents that well...and those reflections don't help...there is one much deeper dent in the middle of the edge of the car roof where it meets the windscreen...but the damage is visible and the car hire company won't be able to re-rent it straight after we return it. But it could be a lot worse...if the girl had not have survived for example.

So much of today has been spent speaking to the local police and 'The Safer Neighbourhood' unit so that we could get all those important Incident Numbers etc for Europcar, the hire car company. The police have been brilliant as they try to help us avoid paying the Excess. DH will give a statement tomorrow when the police come to the guesthouse...we don't have much to say as we weren't awake but we can identify the damage.

After all that seriousness, here's a photo I took today downtown in York...

A little sideline perhaps! Lol

That is really shocking but how lucky your car was there to save her....even though it might not seem like good luck at the moment. When she recovers, she will be forever grateful for the soft landing.

How awful! Glad she will be OK, but I don't envy you the task of explaining it to the hire car people.

I'd love to know how the Indian restaurant came by its name.

Not the sort of highlight you would be wishing for. Hopefully she will make a full recovery and find some help along the way.
What an unusual name for an Indian Restaurant...

Hello Maria,

Hope the young lady concerned gets the medical/mental help she needs. Love that name of the restaurant, I wonder if it is referring to the chef's wife!

Happy travelling.
Bev.

Oh Maria, what a horrible thing to have happened. I am so pleased she survived...and although I am sure the complications that will now have to be sorted with the car hire company will be tedious, in a way, thank goodness you were parked just there.
I do hope that the police and the insurance company are able to get things straight with the car hire place. I also hope that having to stay around to make statements etc doesn't disrupt you travel plans too much....although today looks like being another lovely day weather wise, and York is a gorgeous place to wander around. When I taught, some 30 years ago... we used to take kids on an end of year outing to York... with the museums,( have you been to the railway museum, and the city museum?) the wall, the river and of course the fabulous minster and the surrounding ancient streets...they loved it...as did the teachers who took them.
Take care Jxxx

As a Mother, I'm so sad for the young girl who felt so lost. I'm pleased she survived, and will hopefully get the treatment she needs. Hopefully a copy of the police report will save your excess.

oh what an awful thing to happen but I just knew before you said it that your car was involved! Hope it does not spoil your visit to York, it is a lovely place and so much to see. Make sure you have afternoon tea at Betty's Tearoom! (not far from the Minster)

Oh my goodness - life is never boring when you are around. Life must be intolerable for some of these young that feel the only way out is to 'jump'.
I love York but have heard that things have changed quite a bit since I was a 16 year old which was when I last went there.
Thank you for giving me so many memories back.

O Maria - indeed! What a thing to happen. As you say, it's good that the young lady concerned survived her jump.
I hope it didn't set your travels plans too far off course - with the statements and hire car arrangements.
Who would've thought - you never know what will happen in life do you.
You and your DH are certainly sound sleepers - all the good sea air no doubt.
Cheers :D)

You really got into a drama, it sounds like from a movie! Thank God that your car saved the girl. It must be a bit strange to drive on with those dents to remind you on what happened.
