Christchurch...after the 2011 Earthquake, Part 1....

DH and I came to the south island of NZ for our honeymoon and we loved walking around the streets of this city looking at all the lovely buildings. Today we revisited downtown Christchurch...even though Karl's mum warned us last night that the devastation of the CBD was unbelievable  it was still a shock. I found all the vacant lots and closed off streets really made it difficult to get my bearings...
When you look at the photos just remember that these are central business district streets of a major city...there are huge vacant allotments where city buildings once were...

The shipping containers are being used to hold up a building's front wall; see photo below

We found this delightful, quirky sculpture just near a rebuilding site...
My BIL and SIL snuggling on the grass (synthetic) couch
So readers don't suffer from 'photo overload' I'll post more photos another time :-) We had a very full day sightseeing so lots to share.

Thank you for those birthday wishes...my actual birthday is still to come but hopefully we'll find something exciting to do here in NZ for another celebration! lol

Wow Maria, such a sad sight. Terrible things that the earth does to itself. When is your Birthday? Have a great time celebrating it x

How sad, and amazing really. I certainly thought things were back to normal by now. The use of containers to hold things up looks very scary.
Some fascinating, if sad, photos. J.
